We’ve been getting asked this question quite a bit lately so we figured it would be worth creating a post about it. If you’re wondering what heck a VPN is, how to use it, and where to get one, then you’re in the right place.

So without further ado, let’s get our geek on!

What is a VPN?

A VPN (short for Virtual Private Networking) is a technology that allows you to securely join a remote network from outside of it’s physical location. So say you have a network at home (your computer, smart phone, etc.) with all of your devices connected to the same wired or wireless network, sharing files with each other. With a VPN, you can connect to your home network, say from your office, and your device will act as if it was right at home. You will be able to privately communicate over an encrypted connection and share files with your devices at home as if you were there.

So why does this interest you? (wait for it…) you will also now share the SAME IP ADDRESS as that of your home. So in short, a VPN will create a virtual environment for your device which allows it to operate as if it were physically somewhere else.

Now, VPN services have been commercialized to cater to such needs as giving one the ability to change their IP address while also adding a BRINKS truck level of security to your connection. I’m sure you can now see why there’s so much buzz around this. If not.. read on.

That’s nice and all. But why would I want one for my TV box?

We’re glad you asked! The answer is two-fold, really.

Remember how we mentioned that you would be able to share the IP address of another network? You got it, that same technology can be used to change the IP address of your TV box.

Secondly, it inherently secures ALL traffic between your device and the internet no matter what. This means anything that you access (even if it’s not secure) will automatically become secured, encrypted, and private. Not even your ISP will be able to see a single thing you’re doing (and they couldnt even if they wanted to, hail AES 256-bit encryption!).

Now going back to the IP thing. This can be quite valuable for some. If you want to access all kinds of content that blocks other countries from viewing it (HULU, anyone?) and even content that your ISP might be blocking from you, then a VPN will unlock all of this for you! You can quite literally just select the country/city of where you want your IP address to originate from and poof, you’re there.

But I must admit, the whole security aspect of using a VPN is our favorite part. In a world full of prying eyes, it’s important that we’re able to maintain our right to privacy.

So do I need it?

I feel you know what I am going to say here. You don’t NEED anything 😆

But it’s important that you have the information so you can make a decision that’s right for you. Do we recommend it? Absolutely. For the cost of a few cups of coffee, you can #1) have access to content that is available anywhere in the world and #2) rest easy knowing that your information and online activity is 100% secure and private.

I want one, but there are so many out there! Just tell me which one works best. Pretty please!

You know we wouldn’t make such a post if we couldn’t point you in the right direction. We’ve tested a lot of VPN services and our top criteria was:

  • Encryption and privacy
  • Number of countries and cities to choose from
  • Multiple device support
  • Multiple platform support (Android, Windows, etc.)
  • Ease of use
  • Low cost

We’re fairly confident that you would share the same criteria so let’s just say that all of the hard hard has been done for you. Check out IPVanish! They have the best VPN experience that we have ever seen and all you need to do is download their Android app onto your TV box and in two clicks, you are fully secured and private.
